Summary: "Some difficult problems for an "idiot", but overall a good book"
This book covers a variety of topics in chess, from how to play, tactics, strategy, trivia, and descriptions of many great players in the past.
Easily it's greatest strength are the problems at the end of each chapter, including the several chapters on tactics and strategy in the first half of the book, with no disrespect the breadth of material that it covers and Wolffe's enthusiasm and sense of humor, which help make this book rather enjoyable.
The reason why this book did not get 5 stars is that several problems in each chapter are clearly beyond a beginner level, especially for someone reading this as their first (or one of their first 5) chess books, sometimes markedly so, when one is still trying to learn the basics and just a little beyond.
Overall, I think Alburt/Palatnik's Comprehensive Chess Course I & II are better chess books for the beginner, as they cover the same material with more extensive repetition and drilling in a more logical progressive order (vol I = rules/board visualization; vol II = tactics/endgames/annotated games/review of vol I), although they do not have specific chapters on chess strategy (which is volume VI in the Comprehensive Chess Course Series, which I have not read yet).
But this book is otherwise pretty good.

Summary: "Excellent Learning Tool"
I bought this book in order to teach myself how to play chess. I am still reading and making notes, but can tell you that is very easy to follow and understand, which is what I needed. The explanations are very clear and thorough and do not skip steps by assuming any prior knowledge. I also feel that the writing respects the reader as a beginner and is written in an encouraging manner (in spite of the title, I do not feel that the writer considers the user to be an "idiot"!!) I would not hesitate to recommend this book.

Summary: "Great book for the beginner"
When I decided I wanted to learn chess three years ago, I picked up this book and never regretted it. This is the perfect book for beginners looking to learn the rules and some basic tactical information on the game. I found my level quickly jumped upon finishing the book. I found the exercises extremely helpful. It may be tempting to just glance at them, but actually navigating through them was extremely valuable to me in really practicing the concepts in order to be able to implement them during a game. This book is definitely just the start; there is so much to learn about the game and so many books out there to help with openings, strategy, etc. But this book is a fabulous introduction to chess. In addition to the practical, it also includes some historical and trivial information which makes learning the game that much more fun. Highly recommended!

Summary: "some good points"
The book covers a wide range of topics and I found the information on history and "chess" personalities to be very entertaining. My only complaint, so far, is the openings section. The author covers only two openings in the entire book. I understand its a book for beginners but only two out of the many popular chess openings seems a bit inadequate to me.
